Compassionate transport

WestJet Cargo’s compassionate transport is carried out with the utmost care and respect, providing peace of mind for all involved. Cremated or non-cremated remains take priority when loading and unloading our aircraft.

Our Cargo team works with funeral homes or freight forwarders for non-cremated remains and can accept cremated remains directly from individuals, funeral homes or freight forwarders, ensuring seamless handling and transportation to final destination.

Regulations

  • Packaging of cremated and non-cremated human remains must comply with WestJet Cargo and IATA regulations. 
  • Non-cremated remains require a hermetically sealed casket, approved metal container or combination unit. 
  • Urns must be packaged by the funeral home or freight forwarder to be protected from damage and meet requirements for screening. 

Shipping guidelines

  • All appropriate documentation must accompany human remains, cremated or non-cremated: 
    • signed death certificate;
    • burial permit;
    • and/or burial transit removal permit as mandated by local, state, and government regulations.
  • All shipments require proper identification at the top end of the container or casket.

Restrictions

  • Shipments likely to damage the carrier's equipment or other shipments.
  • Shipments tendered with instructions to collect on delivery (C.O.D.). 

Shipments subject to prior arrangements

  • Shipments requiring special attention, protection, or care en route.
  • Shipments containing pieces of unusual shape or size.* 
  • Shipments (other than seafood) containing any single piece weighing more than 136 kilograms or 300 pounds.
  • Compassionate transport.
  • Shipments, or any part thereof, whose overall dimensions (length + width + height) exceed a total of 228 centimetres or 90 inches.

Embargoes

WestJet reserves the right to place carriage embargoes on products and calendar dates. Stations will be notified of new or pending embargoes by bulletins from WestJet Cargo. Likewise, any embargoes that are lifted without a previously advised end date will also be communicated by WestJet Cargo. Any uncertainties must be clarified with WestJet Cargo prior to acceptance of the goods for carriage.
