Operational update
In November and December, we were fortunate to experience favorable weather conditions, resulting in minimal Irregular Operations (IROPS). Despite encountering high passenger load factors on crucial cargo routes, leading to reduced payload, our team proactively communicated these circumstances to our customers. The capacity was meticulously managed by our Revenue Management (RM) team. Throughout December, WestJet Cargo transported cargo on more than two thousand flights. This accomplishment truly reflects the exceptional teamwork within our organization. Speaking of teamwork, our Cargo operations wouldn't be possible without the invaluable contribution of our Operations Control Centre (OCC) team.
In 2023, we implemented two novel operational roles, namely the Cargo Operations Lead and the Cargo Optimization Coordinator, with the aim of enhancing our ability to assist and synchronize the requirements of both our internal and external partners. Our Leads offer direct guidance, operational expertise, frontline leadership, and procedural support to various teams including the Cargo Ops team, Cargo Service teams, warehouse teams, and ramp operations during their shifts. Serving as subject matter experts, they handle all matters, issues, and inquiries related to our 737 BCF and 787 widebody operations. Leads maintain close collaboration with the Cargo Full Freighter Management (FFM) and Network Planning (NP) teams to align with commercial interests. Operating from the Operations Control Center (OCC), they play a crucial role as intermediaries and points of contact for other essential WS teams, such as Load Control, Network Duty Managers, and Operations Coordinators.
Our Cargo Optimization Coordinators focus on supporting day-of operations for the WestJet passenger network. They monitor cargo priority and capacity, oversee special load shipments, and ensure the smooth flow of cargo through the system according to plans. These Coordinators serve as the primary contact and support for all operational and system-related matters, issues, questions, or concerns related to our WestJet narrow body and Encore fleets. Collaborating with Ground Handling Agents (GHAs), they contribute to the planning of cargo movement to minimize disruptions to flights within the WS network. Proactively identifying concerns that could impact cargo movement, Optimization Coordinators take decisive action to mitigate the impact on our operations and customers.

The inaugural flight on Monday, Dec 4 from LAX-GDL marked the beginning of an exciting chapter in aviation as WestJet Cargo and Awesome Cargo embarked on their collaborative journey. This partnership, rooted in a shared leasing relationship with BBAM, reflects the dynamic spirit of entrepreneurship within established cargo divisions.
The alignment of aircraft types not only symbolizes the shared commitment to excellence but also establishes a robust foundation for the success of this venture. As both entities join forces, they bring together a wealth of experience, expertise, and a forward-thinking approach that is set to redefine the landscape of cargo operations.
A few noteworthy facts about Awesome Cargo highlight its recent achievement of obtaining the Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from Mexico's Federal Civil Aviation Agency on October 13. With headquarters strategically located at NLU Airport in Mexico City, Awesome Cargo aims to position itself as a key player in the LATAM region, leveraging the extensive knowledge accumulated over 40 years from Aerocharter Group.
This collaboration represents more than just a partnership; it signifies a convergence of vision, capability, and determination to elevate cargo services to new heights. Together, WestJet Cargo and Awesome Cargo are poised to make a lasting impact on the industry, opening up new possibilities and setting a standard for excellence in the world of air cargo.

In 2023, WestJet Cargo has undergone significant expansions and improvements to enhance its cargo products, solidifying its position as a key player in the aviation cargo industry. From the opening of 24 warehouses. 14 Freighter Handling stations, to the integration of Sunwing and the introduction of CAO Certification, WestJet Cargo is poised to meet the evolving demands of its customers.
WestJet Cargo introduces a new offering for January 2024 – 'Safe Air,' a holistic solution designed for the secure transportation of high-value cargo. The product caters to a diverse range of sectors requiring secure and specialized handling of their valuable cargo, and was developed in close collaboration with freight forwarders focused on the secure cargo transportation of these high value goods, from banking to luxury goods, high-end technology, pharmaceuticals, and confidential document transport.
