Getting to know our team

Our operations thrive on the commitment of our dedicated team members. Among them, two individuals have demonstrated exceptional dedication to our cargo operations. Join us as we delve into their roles and explore the behind-the-scenes of their world.

Chau & Dharmesh, Cargo Operations Coordinator and Cargo Operations Lead:

        1.  What are some of the most common tasks you perform on a daily basis?

Chau -  On a daily basis, Cargo Optimization Coordinators will be coordinating with both internal and external partners to maintain cargo movement within the network.

We are primarily assisting with systems navigation in ensuring successful cargo movement or initiating or following up on any investigation inquiries related to (Irregular Operation) IROP movement of Cargo.

We strive to keep extra vigilance on Live Animals, Valuable Shipments, Company Materials, Aircraft Parts, Human Remains and priority cargo.

Dharmesh - The most common tasks we perform is to make sure that we are supporting our stakeholders like W/H and ramp to move the cargo in a timely manner, which includes monitoring 500 plus flights daily from cargo acceptance process to the delivery of the cargo.

        2.  What types of cargo do you typically deal with, and are there any specific challenges associated with handling them?

Chau -
other types of cargo we often see within the network are: Lobsters, exotic birds, Sports equipment, Musician Instruments, and various Fruits and Vegetables.

With the opportunity to transport the above in the belly's of our fleet in conjunction to specialized shipments on the freighters, constraints that Cargo Operations have seen mirror the IROPs that the passenger flights undergo.

Dharmesh -  I love challenges, won't life be too easy if there were no challenges ? I am extremely proud that we not only move medicines for the patient and hospitals, but also move people's beloved pets to their destination safely and in a timely manner. The challenges due to weather conditions make it difficult sometimes, but we always make sure that people are satisfied with WS cargo. It is great I am part of WS cargo that is making a difference in life of the Canadian families in every possible way from delivering fresh avocados to amazing apparel for the family.

        3.  Can you share any memorable experiences or challenges you've encountered while working in the warehouse?

Chau -
Our Warehouse partners have been integral in accepting, transiting the cargo to/from the aircrafts and delivering to our guests. Collaborating and working together to ensure the safety and quality when bringing the Polar Bears (Baffin and Siku) into YYC in the early hours from YWG was an experience that I am incredibly proud of.

Dharmesh - I had to move an IMAX screen from YYC to HKG. The sheer length and the challenge of loading IMAX screen that on B747-800 using the nose door operation was something I have always cherished apart from moving Bell helicopters to India.

        4.  Outside of work, do you have any hobbies or interests that you're passionate about?

Chau -
In my spare time you'll likely find me somewhere in the mountains accompanied by my shadow- my 3 Year old Shiba Inu or at a dental clinic in my other role as an Orthodontic Assistant! Fun Fact: I was the worst Orthodontic patient. I purposely bit into an apple and pulled most of my braces off, and when I started Invisalign as an adult I would forget my trays prior to leaving for multi-day pairings. (Don't be this patient).

Dharmesh - I play cricket professionally in Calgary during the summer's(hopefully this summer will be longer). I have a passion for helping others and make a positive impact on people's lives, even small actions can have a significant impact, and by collectively working towards positive change, we can create a better world for ourselves and future generations. Well said!
